Endemic to rain forests of E. Madagascar.
They are frugivorous and selective feeders, especially susceptible to disturbance. Threats include habitat loss due to slash-and-burn agriculture, logging and mining. They are large bodied and diurnal, and one of the more expensive and desired meats therefore also among the most heavily hunted of all lemur species.The only primate to build nests exclusively for the birth and care of infants.
