Critically Endangered, probably Extinct
Endemic to the S. Island of NZ, last seen in 2007, this ground dwelling bird requires large tracks of forest. Slate gray with long legs, black mask, and orange wattle.
Its decline is due to large-scale habitat destruction, fragmentation and introduced species: brush-tailed possums and black rats prey on eggs and chicks while weasels prey on adults. Introduced goats and deer destroy favoured understorey plants.
